Clutch Slip & DragTech Talk Page

A standard clutch is run wet in grade 20 oil.  Clutch slip & drag can occur because gearbox oil, (EP90), can push its way up from the gearbox via the clutch pushrod.  This EP90 gearbox oil contaminates the grade 20 clutch oil, thus causing the clutch slip and drag.

Bronze sintered clutch plates are especially prone to slipping and dragging when they are contaminated with EP90.  Bronze sintered clutch plates soak up EP90 over a period of time and it leaches out when the plates get hot.  Bronze sintered clutch plates are generally a cause of the "heavy clutch" syndrome complained about by many Commando riders, especially 850cc Commando riders.  We recommend a switch to using surflex plates instead (don't forget to order an extra steel plate when switching to surflex).

To solve the problem of oil contamination, fit a clutch rod seal, (our parts number 068833 for Commando & 068844 for Dominator/Single).  You might find Tech Talk articles 11 & 12 an interesting read.
