How To Care For Them

The following instructions are to be applied when the engine is in situation in the chassis and all ancillaries are connected.

This engine must be used with monograde 50 oil, (SAE 50).  It must not be used with multigrade oils of any type.

Before starting the engine, remove the inlet and exhaust rocker covers.  Pour 100cc of monograde oil slowly into the inlet rocker box and 50cc slowly into each exhaust rocker box.  This will lubricate the timing gears and cam gears.  Replace covers and do not over tighten nuts.

Remove spark plugs and turn the engine over slowly with the kickstart for 5 minutes to prime the crankshaft gallery with oil, making sure that the oil tank level is kept above the minimum level.  Replace the spark plugs and start the engine as normal.

Run the engine for 10 minutes at 2000-2500 revs, but do not ride the bike.  Leave the bike overnight to cool.  Tighten all cylinder base nuts, cylinder head bolts and nuts etc, as per the workshop manual.  Re-set the tappets to your particular engine specification.

After 50-100 kilometres, (30-60 miles), re-tighten the head and base fixings and re-set the tappets as above.  At this time, and periodically for the next 3000-5000 kilometres, (1800-3000 miles), recheck engine to engine plate fixings as these are prone to loosen, especially if the engine plates have been painted.

Change the oil after 400 kilometres, (250 miles) and again at 1600 kilometres, (1000 miles).

If you have an external oil filter kit, change the oil at periods of 3200 kilometres, (2000 miles).  If you don’t have an external oil filter kit, change the oil at every 1600 kilometres, (1000 miles).

Follow the running-in procedure in the workshop manual.

Safe Riding.
